Student experience in Malta: Thoughts in colour

EP Malta Exchange Program

Hi, I am Lucas Franco Carmona from Brazil, an English student at EP Malta. Today, I would like to share my incredible experience here in Malta as part of my Exchange Programme at English Path. Let me walk you through a bit about my life here.

Not many of you would know this, but I am autistic. This text is an expression of my feelings and gratitude. I want to use this incredible opportunity to thank everyone who has been important to me throughout this journey. I understand that this may not be the usual way of sharing such thoughts, but it’s my own way.

A little bit about the Exchange Programme

First, I want to say this: if you’re considering travelling abroad to learn English as a part of an Exchange Programme, my advice is simple—do it.

I would describe my time here at EP Malta as one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had. An Exchange Programme focused on English is not just about learning the language; it’s about exploring new places, meeting people from different backgrounds, and embracing a new culture. So, if you’re thinking about enrolling in an Exchange Programme, I can assure you—it will be one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life.

Furthermore, I highly recommend English Path to start your language journey. This school has made my time here in Malta even better. With great teachers, fantastic classmates, excellent facilities, and enriching classes, I can’t recommend it enough.

Have you ever heard of Malta?

No? Well, let me introduce you to this fantastic country.

If you look it up online, you’ll find descriptions like: “Malta is a small country in the middle of the Mediterranean. Its two official languages are Maltese and English, and the capital is Valletta, which is the smallest capital city in the EU by both area and population.”

But I prefer to describe Malta as a 'paradise on Earth.' From its unique architecture to its stunning natural beauty, there are countless breathtaking places for you to explore. And I’m just getting started!

Whether you’re an adventurous spirit or someone who prefers to relax and enjoy scenic views, Malta offers something for everyone. You can take a boat trip, go snorkelling, plan a hiking trip, or simply unwind in beautiful surroundings. And for those who love a good party, Malta is also home to lively spots, especially in Paceville and St. Julian’s.

One place that stands out is Valletta. For me, Valletta, the capital of Malta, is one of the most amazing and unique places I’ve ever visited. And if you think it’s beautiful during the day, you should see it at night. Valletta at night is something I will never forget—the atmosphere, the buildings, the lights—all of it is simply mesmerising.

Another highlight of my time here has been the diversity. I’ve met people from all over the world, which has enriched my experience in Malta even more.

People in Malta

Now, this part will be a bit more personal. Remember, this is just my way of expressing my feelings and thoughts about my time in this wonderful country.

I will never forget my first days in Malta. It was an adjustment to be away from home. I can recall so many moments when I felt like giving up and packing my bags. But thanks to the constant support of my teachers and peers at EP Malta, I didn't. From the very beginning, when I introduced myself in my first class, I felt safe and comfortable to talk about my diagnosis. My first teacher, Neringa, was incredibly supportive. After class, she took the time to speak with me, to understand me, and to offer help if and when needed. Those words meant a lot to me, they still do. It made me realise that I could ask for help when necessary.

Neringa was also an instrumental part of my journey and was there for me when I started losing confidence in my class. There were times when I thought, “I’m not good enough. English isn’t for me. I can’t learn.” But after talking with her, I felt stronger and more confident and decided to stay in Malta. Having teachers who believe in you is invaluable. As a teacher, you can make a huge difference in a student’s life—helping them continue to pursue their dreams or, unfortunately, making them give up. For all these reasons and more, I want to say, “Thank you, Neringa.” I hope other students find teachers like you. I wouldn’t be writing this text if it weren’t for you.

Thinking of Neringa brings to mind the wonderful people I’ve met in Malta. My first group at English Path was amazing. I’m so lucky to have met each and every one of them. Thank you all for the great moments we shared. You have no idea how much I admire each of you. You made my time in Malta happier and more special.

I’ve also met incredible people in my current study group. My classmates and teacher, Lisa, are fantastic. I’ve learned so much from this group, and our classroom atmosphere is always inspiring. Lisa’s classes are engaging and ignite our curiosity to learn. I’m so grateful for that, and I would like to thank you for making my days brighter.

Some of the people I have met at EP Malta have become more than classmates—they’ve become friends—friendships I’ll cherish forever. The memories I’ve created in Malta would not be the same without them. My time here has been incredible, unbelievable, and unique because of all of you. The only downside of living such an incredible life for the past few months is having to return to Brazil soon. But perhaps that’s part of life’s beauty—each moment is unique. So, I’m happy, and I hope we can stay in touch.

And to my special friends here, I don’t have words to express how much you mean to me. You’ve become close and are some of my most trusted people, whom I know I can always count on. But beyond that, you are people I admire deeply—amazing individuals with incredible stories who have made a lasting impact on my life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I also want to thank the special people I met before coming to Malta. Without you, none of this would have been possible. Thank you for being the foundation of the dreams I’m living now.

My dreams

I used to think I would never be able to travel abroad, study in another country, or make new friends. I thought I wouldn’t do anything extraordinary with my life. But I couldn’t have been more wrong. My time at EP Malta has shown me that I’m capable of much more than I ever imagined.

What made all the difference for me was finding people who believed in me and learning from them. If they can believe in me, then I know I can achieve anything. And so can you.

Don't let your fears hold you back from achieving your dreams. Take that step to start your language journey with EP Malta because I believe in you.
